Why it matters

A fan that's quiet, steady and safe

A ceiling fan is a heavy, spinning appliance fixed above people's heads, so installing it properly matters. Most fan problems we're called out for come down to how it was mounted or wired.

  • Secure fixing. Fans must be fixed to the ceiling structure, not just the plasterboard. We check what's above and add bracing where needed.
  • Enough clearance. Blades need to be high enough above the floor to be safe, generally at least 2.1 metres, and clear of walls, doors and light fittings.
  • Balanced and quiet. A properly assembled and balanced fan shouldn't wobble, click or hum.
  • Right fan for the room. Blade span and motor type should suit the room size. DC motor fans are typically quieter and use less power.
  • Outdoor ratings. Outdoor areas need fans designed for that environment, installed on appropriately protected circuits.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a fan where there's currently a light?

Usually, yes. We'll check the fixing point can support the fan, and whether you want to control the fan and any light separately. Separate control may need an extra cable or a fan with a remote.

How long does it take to install a ceiling fan?

Replacing an existing fan is usually fairly quick. A new fan location needing a new cable and switch takes longer, depending on roof access. Two-storey homes and raked ceilings can take more time.

Can a fan go on a raked or sloped ceiling?

Many fans can be fitted to raked ceilings with the right mounting kit and a longer downrod. Check the manufacturer's specifications for the maximum slope before buying.

Are DC motor fans worth the extra cost?

DC motor fans are generally quieter, use less electricity and often have more speed settings and a remote. For bedrooms in particular, many people find the quieter operation worth it.

Can you install fans outdoors?

Yes, as long as the fan is designed for outdoor use and installed in a suitable covered location. Check whether the fan is rated for damp or wet locations and we'll make sure the installation suits.
