Signs you need more power

When power boards and double adaptors aren't the answer

Power boards have their place, but relying on them because there aren't enough outlets is a common cause of overheating and electrical fires, especially when heaters, kettles or air fryers are plugged in. Consider new power points or wiring if you notice:

  • Power boards plugged into power boards, or extension leads running across floors and under rugs.
  • Outlets or plugs that feel warm, look discoloured, or hold plugs loosely.
  • Breakers that trip when the kettle, microwave and heater run at the same time.
  • A new appliance, such as an induction cooktop or large oven, that the installer says needs its own circuit.
  • Old wiring in a pre-1970s home, particularly if you're renovating anyway.

More about power points and rewiring in Adelaide

Not enough outlets, power boards everywhere, or a new appliance that needs its own circuit? Odin Electric installs power points, dedicated circuits and new wiring for homes and businesses across Adelaide.

When power boards and double adaptors aren't the answer

New circuits must meet current Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), including safety switch (RCD) protection. If your switchboard doesn't have room or suitable protection, we'll tell you before we start, and quote any switchboard work separately so you can decide.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a power point myself?

No. In South Australia, electrical work such as installing or moving power points must be done by a licensed electrical worker. Unlicensed work is dangerous and can cause problems with insurance and when you sell or lease the property.

How long does it take to add a power point?

A single new outlet near existing wiring is often quick. The time depends mostly on access: single-storey homes with a roof space are usually straightforward, while double-storey homes, brick walls and concrete slabs take more work.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my new oven or cooktop?

Most fixed ovens and cooktops, especially induction cooktops, need a dedicated circuit sized to the appliance. Check the manufacturer's installation instructions and send them to us with your quote request.

What's involved in rewiring a house?

A rewire replaces old cabling with new, usually along with new outlets, switches and often a switchboard upgrade. It's disruptive, so it's often done during a renovation or before moving in. We'll inspect first and can quote for a full rewire or just the worst areas.

Are USB power points worth it?

They're handy in kitchens, bedrooms and home offices, freeing up sockets and reducing loose chargers. Choose quality units with enough output for modern phones and tablets. We'll recommend models that suit.
