Plan early

Why the electrician should be in the conversation early

The cheapest time to get the electrics right is before the plasterboard goes up. Moving a power point after a kitchen is finished means cutting walls, patching and repainting. A little planning up front avoids that.

  • Switchboard capacity. New kitchens, air-conditioning and extensions add load. We check early whether the board or supply needs upgrading so it's in the budget.
  • Power point placement. Think about where appliances, chargers, TVs and desks will actually go, not just where outlets have always been.
  • Lighting design. Layered lighting (general, task and feature) works far better than a grid of downlights.
  • Future-proofing. Conduit or cabling for a future EV charger, solar, battery or data points costs little during a build.
  • Connection approvals. New connections and supply alterations may need SA Power Networks applications, which take time. We'll tell you if yours does.
How it works

The stages of electrical work in a build

Planning

We review plans with you or your builder, mark up power, lighting and data positions, and quote.

Rough-in

Before walls and ceilings are lined, we run cables, install back boxes and any new circuits.

Fit-off

Once walls are finished, we fit power points, switches, lights, fans and appliances.

Test and certify

Everything is tested and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for the electrical work.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

When should I contact an electrician for my renovation?

As early as possible, ideally while you're still finalising plans. That lets us flag switchboard or supply upgrades early, and helps you plan power and lighting positions before anything is built.

Do you work with builders?

Yes. We can work as the electrical contractor for your builder, following their program for rough-in and fit-off and coordinating with other trades on site.

Will my switchboard need upgrading for a renovation?

Often, if your home has an older board. Renovations usually add circuits, and new circuits must meet the current Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), including safety switch protection. Older boards may not have space or suitable protection. See our switchboard upgrades page.

Do you handle SA Power Networks paperwork?

Where the job needs a new connection or a change to your supply, the electrical contractor typically lodges the application with SA Power Networks. We'll tell you if your project needs this and allow time for it in the schedule.

Can I supply my own light fittings and appliances?

In many cases, yes. Let us know what you plan to supply when we quote, and provide the installation instructions so we can make sure the wiring suits.
