Why upgrade to LED, and why the details matter
LED lighting uses a fraction of the power of halogen and incandescent globes, runs much cooler and lasts far longer. For a home with dozens of old downlights, the change is noticeable on the power bill and in summer, when halogens add unwanted heat to rooms.
But a good lighting job is about more than swapping globes:
- Insulation safety. Old halogen downlights need clearance from ceiling insulation. We fit IC-rated LED downlights where they'll be near or covered by insulation, reducing the fire risk and gaps in your insulation.
- Right colour for the room. Warm white for living areas and bedrooms, cooler tones for kitchens, laundries and workspaces.
- Dimmer compatibility. Not all LEDs and dimmers work together. Mismatches cause flicker and buzzing, so we match them.
- Weather ratings outdoors. Outdoor fittings need the right IP rating for where they're mounted, from covered pergolas to exposed garden beds.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace my halogen downlights with LED using the same holes?
Usually. Most LED downlights are made in common cut-out sizes. If the new fitting needs a slightly different hole, we can use adaptor plates or recommend a fitting that suits. Halogens with separate transformers need the transformer removed, which is part of the job.
What does IC-rated mean?
IC stands for insulation contact. IC-rated downlights are designed to be installed where ceiling insulation can be close to or over the fitting. They help reduce the fire risk associated with older downlights and let insulation be laid without large gaps.
Which colour temperature should I choose?
Warm white (around 3000K) suits living areas and bedrooms. Neutral or cool white (around 4000K and above) suits kitchens, laundries, garages and workspaces. Some fittings let you switch between colours, which is handy if you're unsure.
Why do my new LED lights flicker when dimmed?
Usually because the dimmer isn't compatible with the LED fitting or driver, or the load is too low for the dimmer. Replacing the dimmer with an LED-compatible model normally solves it.
Can you install outdoor and garden lighting?
Yes. We install weatherproof fittings, sensor floodlights, pergola and alfresco lighting, and garden lighting. We'll make sure fittings and outlets have the right weather rating and that outdoor circuits are protected by a safety switch.
