Signs your switchboard isn't ready for solar or a battery
Solar and battery installers need somewhere safe and compliant to connect. When a switchboard isn't up to it, the installation can be delayed or quoted with extra costs on the day. Common signs your board needs work first:
- It still has ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers.
- There's no spare space for the extra breakers a solar or battery system needs.
- It has limited or no safety switch (RCD) protection.
- The meter panel is old, damaged or may contain asbestos.
- Your installer has told you the board needs upgrading before they can connect.

More about solar and battery electrical work in Adelaide
South Australia has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar in the world, and more homes are adding batteries. Before a system goes in, your switchboard and wiring need to be ready for it. Odin Electric handles the electrical groundwork so your solar or battery project goes smoothly.
Getting your home solar and battery ready
These are the electrical jobs that often need doing before, or alongside, a solar or battery installation.
Pre-install switchboard upgrades. Replacing old or full switchboards that don't have the space or protection needed for a solar or battery connection.
Dedicated circuits. New circuits for battery systems, inverters and backup loads, run from the switchboard to where the equipment will go.
Battery-ready wiring. Preparing cabling and switchboard space now, so adding a battery later is simpler.
Backup circuit planning. Helping you decide which circuits, such as the fridge, lights and internet, should stay on during a blackout if your battery supports backup.
EV charger integration. Installing EV chargers that can work alongside your solar. See our EV charger page.
AC-side fault finding. Checking breakers, isolators and wiring between the inverter and switchboard when something isn't working.
Signs your switchboard isn't ready for solar or a battery
Grid-connected solar and batteries in South Australia also need SA Power Networks approval before connection, and new systems must meet SA's technical requirements, which can include export limits and remote management capability. Your solar or battery installer normally handles that application. We'll make sure the electrical side is ready for them.
Frequently asked questions
Do you install solar panels and batteries?
Our focus is the electrical work that supports solar and battery systems, such as switchboard upgrades, dedicated circuits and battery-ready wiring. Call us to discuss your project and we'll tell you exactly what we can help with.
Why would I need a switchboard upgrade before solar?
Solar and battery systems need space on the switchboard and suitable protection to connect safely. Older boards with ceramic fuses, no spare space or limited safety switch coverage often need upgrading before an installer can connect.
Do I need SA Power Networks approval for solar or a battery?
Yes. Grid-connected systems in South Australia need approval from SA Power Networks before they're connected, and export limits can apply. Your accredited solar or battery installer normally lodges that application.
Can you get my home ready for a battery I'll add later?
Yes. If you're upgrading your switchboard or renovating now, we can allow space and run cabling so adding a battery later is simpler and cheaper.
Will a battery keep my power on during a blackout?
Only if the battery system is designed and installed with backup capability, and usually only for selected circuits. It's worth deciding which circuits matter most, such as the fridge, lights and internet, when planning the system.
