Living in an older home? Here's what we often find
Adelaide has plenty of character villas, post-war brick homes and 1960s and 70s builds. Many still run on electrical installations that were fine when they went in but were never designed for today's appliances: air-conditioners, induction cooktops, home offices and EV chargers.
These are the issues that come up again and again in older homes:
- Ceramic (rewireable) fuses instead of circuit breakers, which don't give the same protection.
- No safety switches (RCDs), or only one covering part of the house.
- Ageing cable insulation that has gone brittle, particularly in roof spaces that get hot in summer.
- Too few power points, leading to double adaptors and power boards daisy-chained behind the TV.
- DIY or unlicensed work from previous owners that doesn't meet the Wiring Rules.

Common home electrical jobs
Most home jobs fall into a handful of categories. If yours isn't listed, call and describe it. Chances are it's routine.
Fault finding. Tracking down why a circuit keeps tripping, a light flickers or part of the house has lost power.
Power points. Extra, relocated and USB power points, outdoor weatherproof outlets and dedicated appliance circuits.
Lighting. LED downlight upgrades, pendants over benches, outdoor and sensor lighting, dimmers.
Switchboards. Replacing old ceramic fuse boards with circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs).
Smoke alarms. Supplying, installing and replacing smoke alarms, including hardwired and interconnected types.
Ceiling fans. New fans, replacements and fans with lights, with the wiring and switching done properly.
Rewiring. Partial or full rewires for older homes with deteriorating or undersized wiring.
EV chargers. Home car charger installation, sized to what your switchboard and supply can handle.
Living in an older home? Here's what we often find
None of this means your home is unsafe today, but it's worth having a licensed electrician take a look, especially before a renovation or if you're adding big new loads. We'll explain what we find in plain English and tell you what's urgent and what can wait.

You get a clear quote or an honest estimate up front. If we find something unexpected, we stop and talk before doing extra work.

Respect for your home
Drop sheets down, dust cleaned up and old fittings taken away. We work like it's our own place.
Frequently asked questions
Do you do small jobs, like one power point or a light fitting?
Yes. Small jobs are a big part of residential work. If you have a few small things on your list, group them together and we can usually knock them over in one visit, which is better value for you.
Can you tell me if my wiring is old or unsafe?
We can inspect your switchboard and a sample of outlets, lights and cabling and tell you what condition it's in. For a thorough check with written findings, book an electrical safety inspection.
Will I get a Certificate of Compliance?
Yes. In South Australia, licensed electrical workers must issue a Certificate of Compliance for prescribed electrical work. We provide one when the job is finished so you have a record for insurance, sale or lease.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Not always. For many jobs you just need to give us access and let us know where the switchboard is. The power may be off for part of the visit, so we'll tell you beforehand how long to expect.
Do you work in units and strata properties?
Yes. Work inside your unit is straightforward. If the job involves common property, such as the main switchboard or meter room, you may need approval from the strata or community corporation first, and we can help you explain what's needed.
