Single phase or three phase? It starts with your supply
The charger you can install depends on the electricity supply to your property, not just the car. Most Adelaide homes have a single-phase supply, which typically suits chargers up to around 7 kW. Properties with three-phase power may be able to run faster chargers, if the car can accept it.
Things we look at before recommending a charger:
- Whether you have single-phase or three-phase supply, and its capacity.
- What else runs at the same time: ducted air-conditioning, pool pumps, ovens, hot water.
- Whether your switchboard has space and suitable RCD protection for a new circuit.
- The cable run from the switchboard to the charger location.
- Whether you have or plan to add solar or a home battery.
- Any SA Power Networks requirements that apply to the charger size.

More about EV charger installation in Adelaide
Charging your electric car from a standard power point works, but it's slow. A dedicated wall charger is faster, safer for daily use and more convenient. Odin Electric installs home and workplace EV chargers across Adelaide, starting with a proper check of what your switchboard and supply can handle.
Everything needed to charge at home
Wall charger installation. Mounting and wiring your wall charger in the garage, carport or driveway, on its own dedicated circuit.
Load and switchboard check. Checking your supply, existing load and switchboard capacity before recommending a charger size.
Switchboard upgrades. Upgrading or extending the board where there's no room or suitable protection for a new circuit.
Solar-aware charging. Setting up chargers that can prioritise excess solar, where the charger supports it.
Workplace charging. Chargers for small businesses and staff car parks, with the circuits to suit.
Load management. Chargers that reduce their output when the house is drawing a lot of power, to avoid overloading your supply.
Single phase or three phase? It starts with your supply
A faster charger isn't always better. Most people charge overnight, and a well-sized 7 kW charger adds plenty of range for typical daily driving. We'll give you honest advice rather than upselling a charger your supply can't support.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just charge my EV from a normal power point?
You can, using the portable charger supplied with many cars, but it's slow and puts a heavy continuous load on a standard outlet for hours. If you do, use a circuit in good condition and don't use extension leads or power boards. For regular charging, a dedicated wall charger is the better option.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
A straightforward installation near the switchboard can often be completed in a few hours. Long cable runs, switchboard upgrades or three-phase work take longer. We'll give you a timeframe with your quote.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. If your switchboard has room and the right protection, we can often add the circuit to your existing board. Older boards with ceramic fuses or no spare space usually need upgrading first. See our switchboard upgrades page.
Can my charger use my solar power?
Some chargers can monitor your solar and charge from surplus generation. It depends on the charger model and your solar setup. Tell us what system you have and we'll advise what's possible.
Can you install a charger I've already bought?
Often, yes. Send us the make and model before you book so we can check it suits your supply.
